Coping with Infertility

by Jennifer Bessel, Ph.D.

Infertility is a stressful state. If you are struggling with infertility, stress creates a vicious circle. You get stressed because you can’t conceive, which makes you more stressed, which makes it even harder to conceive.

Women and Stress

by Jennifer Bessel, Ph.D.

Women have to cope with many stressors on a daily basis. Women must balance work and family, cope with aging parents and handle interpersonal conflicts. As stressors build up, the physiological effects of stress can chip away at the body and cause physical illness and emotional distress.

Stress

What is Hypnosis?

by Jennifer Bessel, Ph.D.

Hypnosis involves learning how to use your mind and thoughts in order to manage emotional distress (anxiety, stress) or to change certain habits or behaviors (negative thinking).

Hypnosis is a learned skill and can often, but does not always have to include relaxation. It is a participatory process and a collaboration between you and your therapist. Working with a licensed therapist who is also trained in hypnosis can help you to reach your goals and address underlying barriers to change.

Choosing Euphoric Birth

(as printed in Rogue Valley Parent, Mar. 2008)

For an ecstatic minute we watched as tufts of soft golden baby hair undulated in the warm water, then mom reached down to receive her new baby, birthed into her mother’s hands with a silent whoosh. …. A pink quiet moment of joy, mom and dad holding their 11 pound (!) baby girl, strong and alert from the start.

After five hours of active labor, free of distress or anxiety, free of any hard pushing, free of intervention… this mother’s description was “it just felt wonderful… it felt so good…. I just loved that.”

How positive thinking may ensure a positive outcome

I have recently mentioned how the effects of stress can negatively impact the body, thus putting a damper on fertility. Another way it can hinder your chances is via the mind/body connection.

How Helpful is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an ancient form of healing that dates back to the times of ancient India and Egypt. It is still widely used in modern China instead of anesthesia for many surgical procedures. "Hypnosis is helpful to anyone who is going into medical treatment, because it helps the person stay relaxed and de-stressed," says Joanne Marrow, PhD., professor emeritus at Cal State Sacramento. The common outcomes of therapeutic hypnosis are: improved self-image and confidence, and a profound sense of achievement and empowerment.

It’s Conceivable! Using the Power of Your Mind to Help you Conceive

by Carol Yeh-Garner, LCSW, HBCE, CHF

The average price of IVF is easily $10,000-$20,000 and the procedure is often repeated 3 to 4 times. The price of donor egg IVF is considerably more and the procedure may also need to be repeated. The cost of hiring a surrogate is typically around $100,000 and there are no guarantees in any of these scenarios. Some insurance companies cover some of the financial expenses, but the emotional impact of infertility can be devastating.

Hypnosis for Childbirth: What Is It -- And Does It Work?

By Kerry Tuschhoff, HCHI, CHt, CI

Mention the words “labor and delivery” to an expectant mom in her last trimester, and chances are good that her heart will begin to race and her mind flood with concern -- and in some cases, panic. She knows that the day is coming when a force much bigger than herself will take over and her body will govern itself completely.

For some women, birth is a very fearful event. For “hypnomoms,” it is merely a challenge.

What is hypnosis, anyway?
